What is this trend?
This trend covers consumer claims that a business enrolled customers into a recurring subscription, renewed it, or kept charging after a cancellation attempt without clear terms, specific consent, or an easy way to stop billing.
What caused it
California’s AB 2863 amendments took effect July 1, 2025, keeping state automatic-renewal obligations prominent even as the federal click-to-cancel rule was vacated. The resulting exposure spans streaming, SaaS, gyms, meal kits, apps, and other recurring-revenue businesses.
Practices driving the lawsuits
- Pre-selected or low-visibility trial and add-on subscription enrollment
- Renewal terms or recurring charges that are not clear and conspicuous
- Cancellation flows that require extra steps, hidden paths, or separate cancellation of add-ons
